Reduce Indigestion & Acid Reflux

  • Except in emergencies avoid use of antacids or other preparations to reduce stomach acid, over time this can make the problem worse.
  • Chew food thoroughly and reduce fluid intake with meals as this reduces valuable stomachacid needed for digestion.
  • Eat little & often and avoid large meals later in the day.
  • Sleep slightly propped up if possible.
  • Drinking peppermint, fennel, camomile or green tea after meals aids digestion
  • Reduce acid forming foods & increase foods to alkaline the system.
  • Slippery Elm (obtained from health shops) can help soothe the stomach lining.
  • Food combining can help – don’t eat protein & carbohydrates together at the same meal.  This creates additional stress on the digestive system. (A great nutritionist author is Patrick Holford)

Foods to avoid

Reduce acid forming foods.   These include:

  •  Coffee, cola, black tea, alcohol & refined sugar
  •  Full fat cheeses & rich, creamy foods.
  •  Fried & very fatty foods, spicy foods eg Indian with lots of sauce.
  •  Heavy Red meats e.g Beef, Pork
  •  Wheat-based foods especially processed white bread products.

Friendly Foods to alkaline the system

  •  Cider Vinegar – a tablespoon in a little water before meals aids digestion.
  •  Eat more whole grains other than just wheat eg: brown rice, quinoa, amaranth, buckwheat, millet or spelt based pastas, breads & cereals.
  •  Lots of lightly cooked vegetables & fruits.
  •  Low-fat meats e.g. Venison, turkey, duck, chicken & fish.
  •  Reduce dairy from cows – other kinds available are goats milk and plant ‘milks’ eg Oat, soya, almond milks
  •  Adding fresh ginger to cooking is calming for the gut.
  •  Live full fat yoghurt (lactobacillus/acidopholus) binds with fats.

I knew lots of this but what I didn''''t know about was cider vinegar. Last time I saw Mel for a homeopathic consultation she recommended cider vinegar to me and it has transformed my digestive system - it is wonderful stuff - so thank you so much, Mel!
